font_container=&#8221;tag:h1|text_align:left|color:%23ffffff&#8221; use_theme_fonts=&#8221;yes&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1647553151946{margin-top: -20px !important;}&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>\u201cConsent\u201d is an ongoing process, not a one-time event.<\/h2>\n<p>The signed consent form documents the consent <em>process<\/em>, but it is not the end of discussion.<\/p>\n<p>Care should be taken to ensure that participants <strong>have all of the information available<\/strong> about the results they can receive, and that they <strong>understand what they are agreeing to receive or choosing not to receive.<\/strong> This is especially important when returning genomic data.<\/p>\n<p>Just as consent as an ongoing process, we recommend <strong>regular check-ins to re-affirm the participant\u2019s decision<\/strong> in regard to IRR or to offer them an opportunity to change their mind. These check-ins should be pre-specified, particularly in the event that a participant initially chooses not to receive their IRR, so that the participant continues to feel that their choice was and is respected and does not interpret the check-in as undue pressure or influence.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row full_width=&#8221;stretch_row&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1647555511229{background-color: #003468 !important;}&#8221; el_id=&#8221;documentation&#8221;][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;Documentation&#8221; font_container=&#8221;tag:h1|text_align:left|color:%23ffffff&#8221; use_theme_fonts=&#8221;yes&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1647553221444{margin-top: -20px !important;}&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>In the context of returning IRR, the <strong>Informed Consent Form (ICF)<\/strong> should include these components:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>A statement regarding <strong>whether clinically relevant research results, including individual research results, will be disclosed<\/strong> to participants, and if so, under what conditions<\/li>\n<li>A statement that an<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.mrctcenter.org\/return-of-individual-results\/how-to-return-irr\/how-to-return\/urgent-results\/\">urgent result<\/a> generated during the study will be required to be returned<\/strong>, if applicable, regardless of participant preference\n<ul>\n<li>Whether a participant\u2019s <strong>healthcare provider<\/strong> will or will not be contacted for an urgent result. This should be made clear even if the participant chooses not to receive other results. In some cases, the research requires the participant to <em>consent<\/em> <em>specifically<\/em> to sharing data with the healthcare provider.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Any <strong>foreseeable risks and benefits<\/strong> related to receiving individual results<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Either the ICF or an accompanying information sheet (more below) should include a mechanism for <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.mrctcenter.org\/return-of-individual-results\/how-to-return-irr\/how-to-return\/#opt-in-opt-out\">participants to choose<\/a> whether they want to receive any non-urgent IRR that will be made available.<\/p>\n<p>Sample ICF Language is included <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.mrctcenter.org\/return-of-individual-results\/topics\/informed-consent\/#sample-language\">below<\/a>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2><strong>More specific information about returning IRR does not necessarily need to be in the ICF<\/strong>.<\/h2>\n<p>Instead, the details can be included in an <strong>information sheet<\/strong> that is offered and explained at the time of consent.
